Context

Why Is Kunming Laced with French Yellow Walls?

The metre-gauge Yunnan–Vietnam Railway, opened in 1910 under French direction, linked Haiphong in Vietnam to Kunming as an international corridor. Cement, etched glass, teak and French-trained designers poured in, and from then on mustard-yellow walls, red tiled roofs and bay windows became the signature palette of Republican-era Kunming.

The campus grew from the Yunnan Provincial Examination Hall of the Ming and Qing dynasties, where provincial imperial exams were held for over five centuries — a deep root of learning. Tang Jiyao founded the private Donglu University in 1922; it became the provincial Yunnan University in 1934, and under president Xiong Qinglai rose to National Yunnan University in 1938 — the only national comprehensive university in Yunnan during the war, and the centerpiece of Cuihu's French-style architecture.

The exhibition fully records the history of Yunnan's peaceful liberation, with refined, high-quality furnishings.

By Cuihu stands the French-style Lu Han Mansion — both the private home of the last 'Yunnan King' Lu Han and a witness to Yunnan's peaceful liberation. On 9 December 1949, Lu staged a meeting here and detained seven Nationalist military and political chiefs including Zhang Qun, Li Mi, Yu Chengwan and Shen Zui; that night he declared Yunnan's uprising by telegram, sparing the Spring City from war. The building marries French garden aesthetics with weighty revolutionary history, and is now a Major Historical and Cultural Site under national protection and the Yunnan Uprising Memorial.

The former National Southwest Associated University sits within Yunnan Normal University and is a Major Historical and Cultural Site under national protection — one of Kunming's most humanistically rich landmarks. During the war, Peking, Tsinghua and Nankai universities moved south and merged; for eight hard years they upheld the motto 'Fortitude and Excellence.' Here gathered a generation of master scholars; among over 3,000 students arose two Nobel laureates, Yang Zhenning and Li Zhengdao, and eight 'Two Bombs, One Satellite' heroes — Deng Jiaxian, Zhu Guangya, Zhao Jiuzhang, Guo Yonghuai, Chen Fangyun, Tu Shoue, Yang Jiachi, Wang Xiji, ten pillars of the nation, plus more than 170 academicians of the two academies and many literary and historical giants. Its density of talent is a modern educational miracle.

The site preserves the Associated University monument, wartime classrooms and the tombs of the four martyrs of the 1 December Movement, with vast precious archives — a blend of cultural tourism and revolutionary study, an essential heritage pilgrimage in Kunming.

Why is Lianda at Yunnan Normal, not Yunnan University?

Independent bodies

Lianda was a temporary merged national school of Peking, Tsinghua and Nankai; Yunda was Yunnan's own independent national university, each with its full faculty, students and campuses. Wartime rules forbade one national university from wholly occupying another.

Air raids & space

The Donglu campus sat in the lakeside city center; Huize Hall was hit twice during the war. With only that one main block, its old French-style courtyards could not be retrofitted for Lianda's science and engineering labs.

Own funding

The ministry allocated special funds; Lianda bought 124 mu of vacant land outside the city (today's Yunnan Normal) and planned classrooms, dorms and labs from scratch. Only a few sites were temporarily borrowed and faculty shared; the main body operated independently.

The compound was built in 1940 as the private home of Lu Chongren, director of the Yunnan provincial finance bureau under the Republic — a well-preserved two-storey French-style mansion by Cuihu, a Kunming cultural heritage site. After Yunnan's peaceful liberation in 1950 it became the seat of the Kunming Military Control Commission of the Southwest Military Region; Chen Geng and Song Renqiong worked and lived here, and during the 1957 China–Myanmar border survey Premier Zhou Enlai also stayed.

The museum fully displays the process of the Yunnan Uprising, the army's entry into Kunming and the military-control administration, and reconstructs the work and living scenes of three predecessors — a core red landmark for understanding Yunnan's liberation. A wall away is the viral Huanggong East Street; on foot you reach Cuihu Park, the Yunnan Uprising Memorial (Lu Han Mansion), the Military Academy, Yuantong Temple, Zhu De's former residence and old Kunming streets, stringing together a complete Cuihu revolutionary heritage loop.

A Lake for All Seasons

Whenever you come, Cuihu gives you a reason to pause. Gulls in winter, blossoms in spring, lotus in summer, golden leaves in autumn — each season has its own headliner.

Red-billed gulls migrate through the whole lake, flocks everywhere. Each November they arrive from Siberia; December to February is peak viewing, and by mid-to-late March they gradually leave. The loop trail, mid-lake pavilion, waterfront platform, Tang Dike and Ruan Dike all offer people-and-gull frames.

The 620-metre Cuihu aerial greenway bridges the long-standing divide between Cuihu and old Kunming streets, giving residents and visitors a safe, easy walking route. What once meant a ten-minute detour through traffic now connects the two in five minutes via an elevated walkway with separated pedestrians and vehicles, greatly improving old-town touring. Strolling the sky corridor, the view is open and unique: on one side the grey-tiled old streets rich with daily life, on the other the shimmering, lovely Cuihu — layered scenery, delightful in every season. At its north end, a coffee-culture park blends coffee aroma with old-city charm, fusing millennia of heritage, natural lake views and trendy leisure into one — a rising urban landmark not to miss in Kunming.
