Guests who stay a while in Kunming often ask: where can you go in a day? More than you'd think. An hour south, Fuxian Lake's Class-I water is clearer than Erhai; a 20-minute high-speed train reaches the Stone Forest's karst peaks. North over the Wumeng Mountains, Jiaozi Snow Mountain meadows and Dongchuan's Red Land spread into an earth palette. Kunming is not only a Spring City — it's a base for all these lakes and mountains.
Fuxian Lake · Class-I Clarity
Dianchi (Lake Dian) is the everyday companion; Fuxian Lake is the getaway for a day of quiet. At 212 km² with a deepest point of 155 m, its storage exceeds Dianchi's tenfold, holding Class-I water year-round with extraordinary visibility — as clear and gentle as Erhai. Lakeside wetlands stretch along the shore, beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Just an hour's drive, it is a Kunming weekend favourite.
On the way, the Cambrian Fossil Museum — the Chengjiang Biota lays out the picture of life from the Cambrian explosion over 500 million years ago, called "one of the twentieth century's most stunning scientific discoveries."

Stone Forest · Karst Peaks
Reachable by high-speed rail in just over 20 minutes. A UNESCO World Heritage site, sword-shaped karst peaks rise from the ground, a forest of strange stone, a central Yunnan wonder since ancient times. The Yi people's Torch Festival (around the 24th day of the sixth lunar month) draws tens of thousands in celebration — the liveliest outing of summer. A round trip in a day combines world-class landforms with minority culture.

Dongchuan Red Land · Earth's Palette
Iron oxide dyes the terraces a deep red, called "the earth's overturned palette." Colours peak Sep–Nov; red soil, wheat waves, and buckwheat blossoms layer clearly — a far-suburb secret for photography and road trips. Stay two days to watch and shoot at leisure; nearby are the Shuju Red Army Crossing and the Long March Memorial, worth a detour.
Jiaozi Snow Mountain & Northern Wilds
North of Kunming is another face of the city. Jiaozi Snow Mountain, 4,223 m, is the "first mountain of central Yunnan," with alpine meadows, azalea seas, and winter snow shifting by altitude. Further into Dongchuan, beyond the Red Land, the Spirit Lake (Yaojing Tang) is a glacial moraine lake left by the Quaternary ice age, and the 48-Bend Mountain (Guniu Shan) packs 48 sharp turns within 5 km — called one of China's most thrilling yet beautiful roads. This route is long and high; self-drive or charter 2 days 1 night is recommended.
Four Northern Stops
Jiaozi Snow Mountain
National 4A "first mountain of central Yunnan," 4,223 m. Cable car from Xinshan Pass to the summit reveals alpine azaleas, meadows, and sea of clouds; snow in winter. Ticket 54 + shuttle 30.
Dongchuan Red Land
Iron-oxide terraces at their most vivid after rain and ploughing; nearby Shuju Crossing was one of the three great crossing points of the Yangtze.
Spirit Lake (Yaojing Tang)
In Dongchuan's Lanniping mining area, 3,700 m. A Quaternary glacial moraine lake, clear water and desolate slopes — a rare high-mountain lake near Kunming, reached by hiking.
48-Bend Mountain (Guniu Shan)
48 sharp turns within 5 km; a challenge by car or bike, with open views from the top over rolling peaks.
On the Way · Millennia of Heritage
West out of the city, the southern shore of Dianchi (Lake Dian) holds Kunming's earliest mark. The ancient Dian kingdom took root here from the Warring States through the Eastern Han; in 1956 the Seal of the King of Dian unearthed at Shizhaishan confirmed the Records of the Grand Historian. To see ancient Dian today, begin with the Ox-and-Tiger Ritual Vessel at the Yunnan Provincial Museum, then head south to Shizhaishan and Jinning — if you're already bound for Fuxian Lake or Jinning, pick these up along the way.

The Ox-and-Tiger Ritual Vessel and the covenant shell-container vessel have rested two millennia — the first stop to understanding ancient Dian; allow half a day.
Shizhaishan Site
Where the Dian king's golden seal was unearthed; shell mounds and tombs stretch together by the lake.
